On July 12th the Supreme Court of Canada handed down five decisions on copyright law. Collectively these five judgments send a strong message as to the interpretation of the rights of both owners and users of copyright protected works. In terms of owners’ rights, two of the decisions deal with the scope of the economic right to communicate a work to the public by telecommunication.
